How we evaluate every modality
Spiritual First Aid does not diagnose, does not replace therapy, and does not replace emergency services. It helps you research safely.
Practitioner tiers we distinguish
Licensed Clinician
State-regulated professionals , psychologists, LCSWs, LMFTs, LPCs, psychiatrists, LMTs, and others whose scope of practice is legally defined.
Certified Practitioner
Certification exists (SEP, TRE, EMDRIA, MT-BC, and others), but standards vary. Always verify the certifying body.
Spiritual or Community Practitioner
No formal license , value comes from tradition, lineage, or peer support. Ask about training, ethics, and accountability structures.

Red flags , reasons to leave
If a practitioner does any of the following, walk away. Trust your instincts. You do not owe anyone an explanation for leaving a session, a group, or a program.
- !Claims they can cure every illness
- !Tells you to stop prescribed medication without a medical review
- !Pressures you into large financial commitments
- !Discourages you from consulting other professionals
- !Isolates you from family, friends, or your community
- !Refuses to explain their training, credentials, or lineage
- !Uses shame, fear, or urgency to keep you engaged
- !Crosses physical, sexual, or emotional boundaries
- !Guarantees specific outcomes from spiritual or clinical work
Know when to seek higher care
Spiritual and complementary support can be powerful, but there are times when a licensed therapist, medical provider, or crisis service is the right next step. Our guide explains the gentle signals and how to start.
Emergencies always come first
Spiritual First Aid does not place spiritual healing suggestions above emergency resources. If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, please visit our Crisis Resources page or call 911.
