What this experience is like in depth

Wilderness Therapy is a nature-based approach. It is longer immersive programs combining outdoor challenge with counseling, ranging from reputable adult retreats to controversial adolescent programs. It works with the understanding that healing is not only about insight but also about what is felt, witnessed, and released in the body, relationships, and environment. In a session, you spend days or weeks outdoors with staff and other participants, doing group counseling alongside physical challenge. You will hike, camp, cook, sit in circle, do group and individual work. This is offered in a group setting, typically 3 to 90 days, and this is a touch-free experience. People often choose this when they are carrying Loss of Purpose, Identity Loss, and Life Transition. Over time, this work can become a way of relating to yourself with less fear and more capacity.

Questions to ask before booking

  • ?Are you OBH accredited?
  • ?Who provides clinical care and what are their licenses?
  • ?Is enrollment voluntary?
  • ?What is your safety and abuse-prevention protocol?

Possible risks & safety notes

Adolescent 'troubled teen' wilderness programs have a serious history of abuse. Look for OBH accreditation, transparent consent, and voluntary enrollment. Never enroll a minor in a program that transports them without consent.

Talk with a professional first if this applies to you

Some conditions call for extra care before starting this practice. Please review the following and share what applies with your practitioner.

  • Active or severe trauma symptoms

If you are living with active PTSD symptoms, frequent flashbacks, dissociation, or unprocessed severe trauma, work with a trauma-trained licensed clinician first. Intense or immersive experiences can surface difficult material without adequate support.

These are general cautions, not medical advice. Always share your full health history with the practitioner and your regular healthcare provider before starting something new.
